A Pre-assessment Guide for Binibini Aspirant

Binibining Pilipinas, the premier national pageant for aspiring Filipina beauty queen is a fierce battleground for girls who would like to have a fairy tale come true. And with beauty schools left and right, those dreams are now within reach.

But those dreams don’t come on a red carpet instantly! There is certainly a lot of hurdles associated with it.

Here are some of the bottleneck that previous candidates had experienced that beauty aspirant can use as a self-assessment guide prior to joining the Binibining Pilipinas.

(1) Citizenship

This has been a long debated issue but still coming up intermittently at Binibining Pilipinas. The qualification requires"Filipino" citizenship in order to join the pageant.

Ten percent of the Philippine population or approximately 10 million Filipinos are outside the Philippines. With this figures, the probability of inter-marriages is high especially for singles. This will result in offspring of mixed heritage. Here are sample of Binibining Pilipinas winner of mixed heritage:

Mary Jean Lastimosa (Half-Saudi), Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2014
Marie Ann Umali (Half-Lebanese), Binibining Pilipinas World 2009
Reham Snow Tagum (Half-Egyptian), Binibining Pilipinas World 1995

Citizenship is acquired either by "place of birth (jus soli)" or "blood line (jus sanguinis)" depending on the prevailing law of the country.  Some are lucky enough to have dual citizenship because both the route of acquisition of their citizenship is recognized by both countries they were born in.

Some of the cases that occurred in Binibining Pilipinas over the past year includes: Anjanatte Abayari (American) in 1991, Tisha Silang (Canadian) in 1998, Janelle Bautista (Canadian) in 1999, Venus Raj (Qatari) in 2010.

Most parents would like to have their children acquire foreign citizenship and when opportunity comes, just like in politics, would then re-acquire their citizenship from their country of origin. So blasphemous!

(2) Age

The minimum age requirement to compete is 18 years.

Why did I include this as part of self-assessment guide when it is self-explanatory?

It is because age is a major factor in case you would like to become a repeater for the pageant.

Pia Wurtzbach was already 26 years old when she won the pageant and that is on her third attempt which technically means that she started competing at the age of 23. Should she start competing at the age of 20 and won on her third attempt, she would be 23 by that time.

And this is assuming that you will be competing consistently on the next edition of the pageant. What if you skip one edition of the pageant? Then you already grew old by a year by then. Remember that there is also an age limit in joining an international beauty pageant.

(3) Declaration of Risqué Photo

The Binibining Pilipinas pageant is a mixture of both amateur and
professional model and or actress.

If you are a student or an office professional then you don't have to worry about a previous pictorial you have made.

This is a new issue in Binibining Pilipinas, i.e., disqualifying candidates because of a risque pictorial especially for those who are professional models already prior to joining the pageant.

This is what happened to Bianca Paz in 2009, Sandra Seifert in 2010 and Kim Ross Williams in 2016.

Bianca Paz pictorial for a calendar that cause her disqualification in 2009

Kim Ross Williams pictorial that cause her disqualification for 2016. A test shoot that was never published in any magazine.

Megan Young's pictorial for Rogue Magazine that cause her disqualification in 2013.

Sandra Seifert pictorial for FHM that cause her disqualification in 2010

So if you have done a pictorial previously that might compromise your candidacy, better declare it an earlier period of time instead of exerting effort that will become fruitless in the end.

(4) Joining other pageant before Binibining Pilipinas

Instead of becoming a repeater for Binibining Pilipinas, why not join other pageant first to gain experience?

Some of the reputable pageant you can join in who has been in the business for quite some time already would be:

Mutya ng Pilipinas
Century Tuna Superbods
Slimmer's World Great Bodies

If you started at the age of 18 and joined at least two of this pageant, by the time you are 20 and joined the Binibining Pilipinas, in a way, your pageant skills would already been honed. Not to mention the fact, that beauty schools are constantly on the lookout for their next protégé.

(5) Vaccine for contagious skin diseases

Marilen Espino (who was also Supermodel of the World Philippines 1991) wasn't able to compete at Miss World 1992 because days prior to her departure, she was infected with chickenpox. Chickenpox produce skin blister and would take weeks before healed. Another contagious skin disease that takes weeks to heal would be smallpox and measles.

Unlike fungal diseases or allergy which can be treated in just few days with ointment, viral disease takes time to heal.

Imagine preparing yourself for months or even years for a beauty pageant then suddenly you got infected with this disease, in an instant, all your preparation would just end up in bed!

If you were vaccinated for this airborne diseases then you have yourself protected and your training will not be in vain.

(6) Contract Obligation

Pia Wurtzbach has to be released from Star Magic in order to compete at Binibining Pilipinas Gold in 2013. Maxine Medina was on the original line up in 2012 but because of contractual obligation, she was disqualified. Likewise, Binibining Pilipinas candidates has to wait for six months before they could compete at Miss Earth Philippines or Miss World Philippines.
But of course, not all contract has clause for "non-compete" or "grace period."

(7) Complete the Plastic Surgery before joining the pageant

The internet is a notorious platform for exposure. That includes the shady past. Before joining a beauty pageant make sure that your transformation is complete. It is also important that you disengage yourself from "social media" because there is a possibility that your pictures might have been downloaded as a basis or baseline for comparison. Once you win a pageant, the only thing the public will remember is your victory but that victory will be tarnish if you have a shady past.

By knowing this precautionary measures, you will save yourself from hassle in lodging your application to become a beauty queen.
